Palermo, Sicily's capital, is best explored on foot, wandering through its lively streets and historic centre dominated by the cathedral, whose rooftop offers a remarkable view over the city. The Palazzo dei Normanni, the Teatro Massimo and the Chiesa del Gesù are among the notable buildings worth visiting. The Vucciria market, particularly lively on weekend evenings, is a good spot to sample Sicilian specialities amid a bustling local atmosphere. For dining, Cacio & Pepe, located in the city centre, is known for its excellent carbonara. From the central station, several day trips are worthwhile: Cefalù, around an hour away by train, with its beach and medieval old town, as well as Monreale, famous for its cathedral. Further south, the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento makes for another rewarding excursion. For swimming, Mondello draws plenty of visitors, while Capo Gallo offers calmer, clearer waters, along with a few hidden beaches best reached by car. The local tourist office can provide guidance on nearby natural sites, including a large protected reserve just outside the city.
