Beaune

Beaune, in the Côte-d'Or, is widely regarded as the wine capital of Burgundy. The town is internationally known for the Hôtel-Dieu, a former almshouse founded in the 15th century, celebrated for its multicoloured glazed-tile roofs and Flemish Gothic architecture. Each November, the Hospices de Beaune wine auction draws collectors and trade professionals from around the world. The historic centre, enclosed within medieval ramparts, houses numerous wine merchants and vaulted cellars where visitors can taste wines from the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. The Basilique Notre-Dame, built in the Burgundian Romanesque style, adds to the town's architectural heritage. Beaune also serves as an excellent starting point for exploring the Route des Grands Crus, which winds through renowned wine villages such as Pommard, Meursault and Volnay. The Musée du Vin de Bourgogne, housed in the former Dukes' palace, traces the region's winemaking history. Surrounded by UNESCO World Heritage-listed vineyards, Beaune offers an authentic setting combining architectural heritage, gastronomy and the discovery of Burgundian terroirs.
