Collioure

Collioure, a small Catalan town on the Mediterranean coast in the Pyrénées-Orientales, is best explored on foot through its narrow lanes leading to the town-centre beaches and the iconic bell tower of Notre-Dame-des-Anges church. The Royal Castle, overlooking the harbour, is open to visitors and sometimes offers free entry to 18-25 year-olds during summer. A walk leads up to the old windmill and further on to Fort Saint-Elme, offering sweeping views over the bay. Local anchovies are a speciality worth tasting, while the hills towards Port-Vendres make for a pleasant walk, particularly in the early morning. The modern art museum adds a cultural touch to any visit. Boat trips are also available, including one aboard the Don Silvano, sometimes with drinks served on board. For a relaxed evening out, La Côte à L'Os is worth a mention for its cocktails and friendly service. Nearby vineyards open for tastings, along with the proximity of Banyuls-sur-Mer and the Spanish border towards Rosas, round off a stay combining heritage, nature and Catalan gastronomy.
