Chateauneuf

Châteauneuf, in the Côte-d'Or department, is a medieval village recognised as one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France. Perched on a rocky outcrop, it is dominated by its 12th-century fortified castle, later remodelled in the 15th century, now open to visitors and managed by the Centre des Monuments Nationaux. Cobbled lanes, timber-framed houses and remnants of the old ramparts reflect the village's fortified past. Below lies the Burgundy Canal, popular for walking or cycling along the towpaths, as well as for boat trips. The village also offers sweeping views over the valley and surrounding countryside, dotted with vineyards and Charolais cattle pastures. Set within the Burgundy region, it makes a convenient base for exploring Dijon and Beaune, both known for their wine heritage, as well as Autun with its Gallo-Roman remains. The temperate continental climate typical of Burgundy makes spring and summer particularly pleasant, with warm, dry summers. Châteauneuf provides a quiet setting from which to discover the region's rural landscapes and historic charm.
