Chitry

Chitry, also known as Chitry-le-Fort, is a wine-growing village in the Yonne department of Burgundy, just a few kilometres from Chablis and Auxerre. The village lies within the Auxerrois vineyard area and lends its name to an appellation d'origine contrôlée, Bourgogne Chitry, which produces white, red and rosé wines from chardonnay and pinot noir grapes. The village retains a typical rural heritage, including its fortified church, a reminder of the region's defensive architecture during the Middle Ages. The surrounding landscape is shaped by vine-covered hillsides, creating a peaceful setting ideal for walks and visits to local wine cellars. Its proximity to Chablis makes it easy to explore some of Burgundy's most renowned wine estates, while Auxerre, the departmental capital, provides access to shops, the railway station and major road links. The area suits quiet stays combining vineyard visits, walks through the vines and exploration of nearby Romanesque and Gothic heritage sites. The semi-continental climate brings warm summers and cool winters, well suited to viticulture.
