Montjaux

Montjaux is a small village in the southern Aveyron department, in the Occitanie region, perched on a rocky spur above the Muse valley. Its limestone stone buildings, narrow lanes and the remains of an old castle reflect a medieval heritage that is still clearly visible today. Nearby stands the Chartreuse de Comberoumal, a former Carthusian monastery notable for its architecture and secluded woodland setting. The village is also close to Lac de Pareloup, one of the largest man-made lakes in the region, popular for swimming, sailing and fishing during the warmer months. The surrounding countryside is typical of the Grands Causses area, with limestone plateaus, forests and deep valleys well suited to walking and cycling. Local gastronomy highlights traditional Aveyron produce, such as aligot and sheep's milk cheeses, including Roquefort made in nearby caves. Montjaux therefore makes a peaceful base for exploring an unspoilt rural area, combining nature, religious heritage and outdoor activities, within easy reach of Millau and its famous viaduct, a few dozen kilometres away.
