Belcastel

Belcastel is a small village in the Aveyron department, in the southern part of the Massif Central, set along the banks of the Aveyron river. It is best known for its medieval castle perched on a rocky spur, restored in the 20th century by architect Fernand Pouillon, who chose to live there and was later buried on the site. The Gothic bridge spanning the river, the stone houses with lauze-slate roofs, and the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church form a well-preserved architectural ensemble, which earned Belcastel a place among the Most Beautiful Villages of France. The village is best explored on foot, wandering through its steep lanes and along the riverbanks. The surrounding area offers walking opportunities through gorges and plateaux, along with other characterful villages nearby such as Najac and Villeneuve. Local cuisine showcases Aveyron produce, including aligot, charcuterie, and cheeses such as Roquefort. Belcastel makes for a pleasant stop for those interested in rural heritage and countryside scenery, offering a peaceful setting away from the main tourist routes.
