Estaing

Estaing is a village in the northern part of the Aveyron department, in the Occitanie region, listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France. It sits on the banks of the River Lot, spanned by a Gothic bridge protected as a historic monument, and is a recognised stopover on the Way of St James (Via Podiensis, GR65). The Château d'Estaing, once home to the counts of Estaing and later to the Canons of St John the Baptist, overlooks the village and is partly open to visitors. Cobbled lanes, old stone houses and the Church of Saint-Fleuret reflect a well-preserved medieval heritage. The surrounding hillsides produce a local appellation wine, Vin d'Estaing, grown on terraced vineyards. The River Lot offers opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, fishing and summer swimming, while the nearby gorges and rolling countryside are popular for walking and cycling. Close to Espalion and Rodez, Estaing makes a convenient base for exploring the Aubrac plateau and the Rouergue area. The climate is temperate, with warm summers and cooler winters typical of the Massif Central.
