Montcaret

Montcaret is a small village in the Périgord pourpre area of the Dordogne, near the River Dordogne and just a few kilometres from Sainte-Foy-la-Grande and Castillon-la-Bataille. The village is best known for its Gallo-Roman villa archaeological site, which preserves remains of ancient mosaics and thermal baths, evidence of the area's long history of settlement. The Romanesque Saint-Pierre church adds further historical interest. Montcaret lies at the heart of a wine-growing landscape, close to the Bergerac and Montravel vineyards, ideal for visiting local estates and sampling regional wines. The surrounding countryside, dotted with hills and bastide towns, is well suited to walking and exploring neighbouring villages such as Saint-Michel-de-Montaigne, notable for its connection to the writer Montaigne. The region enjoys a mild South-West French climate, with warm, dry summers. Montcaret makes a peaceful base for discovering the Périgord pourpre, combining historical heritage, local gastronomy and vineyard scenery, away from the busier tourist spots found elsewhere in the department.
