Linguaglossa

Linguaglossa is a town in Sicily, on the north-eastern slopes of Mount Etna, in the province of Catania, at around 550 metres above sea level. Its name, of Greek and Latin origin, is thought to refer to the tongue-like shape of a lava flow. The town has long served as the gateway to Piano Provenzana, a winter sports resort and starting point for trails on Etna's northern side, reached through the Linguaglossa pine forest, an extensive woodland of Corsican pines popular for walking and, in autumn, mushroom foraging. The historic centre retains baroque buildings, including the mother church dedicated to Santa Maria delle Grazie and the Church of San Francesco di Paola. The area lies within the Etna DOC wine-producing zone, with vineyards grown on volcanic terraces, and local cuisine features chestnuts, porcini mushrooms and wine-based specialities. The Circumetnea railway station connects Linguaglossa to other towns around the volcano, while the Ionian coast and Taormina are around thirty minutes away by car, making it easy to combine mountain and seaside excursions.
