Bologne

Bologna, the capital of Emilia-Romagna, is known for its medieval historic centre, one of the best preserved in Italy and recognised by UNESCO for its kilometres of porticoes. The city is nicknamed 'la Rossa' for the colour of its brick rooftops and façades, 'la Dotta' for its university, the Alma Mater Studiorum, founded in 1088 and considered the oldest in Europe, and 'la Grassa' for its celebrated cuisine. Piazza Maggiore, the heart of the city, is flanked by the Basilica of San Petronio and the Palazzo d'Accursio. The Two Towers, Asinelli and Garisenda, dominate the skyline and recall the city's medieval communal architecture. The Quadrilatero district, a former market area, is packed with food shops and trattorias serving tortellini, tagliatelle al ragù and mortadella. A lively university city, Bologna maintains a vibrant atmosphere year-round thanks to its large student population. Its central location makes it a convenient base for reaching Florence, Venice or Milan by fast train. The climate is continental, with warm summers and cool, damp winters.
