Aiguilhe

Aiguilhe is a small town in the Haute-Loire department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, adjoining Le Puy-en-Velay, of which it forms an immediate extension. It is best known for the Chapel of Saint-Michel d'Aiguilhe, perched atop a striking volcanic spire over 80 metres high, reached via steps carved into the rock. This Romanesque 10th-century building, a listed historic monument, overlooks the town and offers panoramic views over Le Puy-en-Velay and its surroundings, including the Notre-Dame de France statue and Notre-Dame du Puy Cathedral. The volcanic landscape of the Velay area appeals to walkers and photographers alike. Aiguilhe makes a convenient base for exploring the Le Puy-en-Velay area, renowned for its lace-making tradition, its AOP green lentils, and as the historic starting point of the Via Podiensis, one of the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela. The climate is semi-mountainous, with relatively mild summers and cool winters. Being right next to Le Puy-en-Velay, visitors can enjoy the shops, restaurants and amenities of a mid-sized town while staying in a quieter, more picturesque setting.
