Sancerre

Sancerre is a hilltop wine village in the Cher department, in the Centre-Val de Loire region, overlooking the Loire valley. It is internationally renowned for its AOC vineyards, producing dry white wines from Sauvignon Blanc grapes, alongside reds and rosés made from Pinot Noir. The medieval town, with its cobbled lanes and old stone houses, retains the Tour des Fiefs, a remnant of the former feudal castle, and offers sweeping views over the surrounding hillsides and the river from its elevated position. The area lends itself to visiting wine cellars and estates, many open for tastings, as well as walks through the vineyards. The nearby village of Chavignol is known for its AOC goat's cheese, a speciality traditionally paired with the local wines. This rural, gently rolling region enjoys a mild oceanic climate, with pleasant summers suited to outdoor pursuits. Sancerre makes a convenient base for exploring the Loire Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site, taking in châteaux, characterful villages and cycling routes such as the Loire à Vélo trail running alongside the river.
