Vrchlabi

Vrchlabí is a Czech town in north-eastern Bohemia, lying at the foot of the Krkonoše (Giant Mountains), of which it forms one of the main southern gateways. Crossed by the Elbe river near its source, the town serves as a classic starting point for hiking and skiing trips into the surrounding peaks, including routes towards Špindlerův Mlýn and the ridge along the Polish border. The historic centre retains a Renaissance château, which now houses the administrative headquarters of the Krkonoše National Park along with a visitor centre and a museum dedicated to the area's wildlife, flora and natural history. The main square and a handful of burgher houses reflect the town's past as a craft and trading settlement. Vrchlabí also has a notable industrial identity, home to a Škoda car factory that employs part of the local population. The climate is mountainous, with snowy winters well suited to winter sports and mild summers ideal for walking. The town itself remains a practical, largely untouristy access point to the natural landscapes of the Krkonoše range.
