Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a market town in Bavaria, southern Germany, formed in 1935 through the merger of the villages of Garmisch and Partenkirchen, within the Werdenfels district. It lies at the foot of the Zugspitze, Germany's highest peak at 2,962 metres, reachable by cable car or cog railway. The town hosted the 1936 Winter Olympics, and its large ski jump stadium still stands as a reminder of that period. The old town retains traditional Bavarian houses decorated with Lüftlmalerei façade paintings, along with pedestrian streets around the Marienplatz. The Partnachklamm gorge, carved through limestone rock, offers a popular walking route just outside the centre. The town is well known for alpine skiing and winter sports, with several ski areas linked to the Wetterstein mountain range, while the turquoise waters of Lake Eibsee sit nearby, close to the Zugspitze summit. In summer, the surrounding Alps draw hikers along numerous mountain trails. The climate is continental and alpine, with cold, snowy winters and mild summers, making the area a year-round destination for outdoor tourism.
