Loviisa

Loviisa is a small coastal town in southern Finland, in the Uusimaa region, on the Gulf of Finland. Founded in the 18th century and named after Queen Lovisa Ulrika of Sweden, it retains a historic centre of colourful wooden houses typical of old Finnish port towns. The Svartholma sea fortress, reachable by boat from the harbour, reflects the town's military past and remains a popular summer attraction. In the 19th century, Loviisa also developed as a seaside spa resort, a heritage still reflected in the town's relaxed atmosphere. The surrounding natural landscape of archipelago islands, forests and coastline is well suited to walking, cycling, fishing and boat trips. Its proximity to Helsinki and Porvoo makes it a convenient base for exploring Finland's southern coast while enjoying a quieter, more authentic setting. The climate, shaped by the nearby Baltic Sea, brings mild, bright summers and cold, snowy winters, ideal for the region's typical seasonal outdoor activities.
