Lappeenranta

Lappeenranta is a town in south-eastern Finland, set on the shores of Lake Saimaa, the country's largest lake, and close to the Russian border. Its historic centre, the 18th-century Lappeenranta Fortress (Linnoitus), overlooks the harbour and houses several museums, including the South Karelia Museum and the Garrison Museum, along with a small Orthodox church reflecting the region's Russian influence. The Saimaa Canal, linking the lake to the Baltic Sea via Russian territory, makes the town a hub for leisure boating during the summer months. The harbour welcomes lake cruise boats, and numerous terraces and restaurants bring the waterfront to life in fine weather. Lappeenranta is also known for its covered market and market halls, where local specialities can be found. The surrounding countryside, dotted with forests and lakes, is well suited to hiking, cycling and watersports in summer, as well as cross-country skiing and ice fishing in winter. Its proximity to the border also makes it a gateway for trade links with Russia.
