Imatra

Imatra is a town in South Karelia, eastern Finland, best known for its location near the Russian border and the Imatrankoski rapids on the Vuoksi River. These rapids, a popular attraction since the 19th century, remain the town's defining feature, with a dramatic water release staged several times a week during summer. Nearby stands the striking Valtionhotelli, a historic castle-style hotel built in the late 1800s to accommodate visitors drawn to the rapids. The Ukonniemi recreation area, on the shores of Lake Saimaa, offers a beach, forest trails and sports facilities typical of Finland's Great Lakes region. Imatra also functions as a border crossing point with Russia, giving it a distinct commercial character. The surrounding landscape is defined by extensive coniferous forests, lakes and a continental climate, with long, snowy winters ideal for cross-country skiing and short, bright summers.
