Balatonboglar/Balatonlelle

Balatonboglár and Balatonlelle form a pair of neighbouring resort towns on the southern shore of Lake Balaton, in Somogy county. This stretch of the lake is known for its shallow waters, which warm quickly in summer, making it a popular choice for families. Both towns feature long sandy beaches, tree-lined promenades and marinas suited to sailing and windsurfing. On the hills above Balatonboglár, the Kishegy wine district is home to several small family-run cellars producing white wines typical of the Balaton region. The town was also once the site of the Kápolnaműhely, a former chapel converted into an art studio that hosted unofficial exhibitions during the communist era, an episode of note in the history of Hungarian contemporary art. A lakeside cycle path links both towns easily to other settlements around Balaton. Local restaurants often serve dishes based on freshwater fish, such as pike-perch or fisherman's soup (halászlé). The continental climate brings warm summers well suited to water sports and lakeside leisure.
