Binissalem

Binissalem is a town in the interior of Mallorca, located in the Raiguer region, around twenty kilometres from Palma. It is best known as the heart of the Balearic Islands' first wine appellation, the Denominació d'Origen Binissalem, home to several bodegas producing red and white wines from local grape varieties such as Manto Negro. The historic centre retains traditional golden stone houses with wide doorways, along with the parish church of Nostra Senyora de Robines, whose bell tower stands out above the townscape. The town is served by the railway line linking Palma and Inca, making it a convenient base for exploring the island's interior without a car. Each September, the Festa des Vermar takes place, a popular grape-harvest festival featuring tastings and street events. The surrounding countryside offers a typical Mallorcan landscape of vineyards, almond trees and quiet country lanes, ideal for cycling. Binissalem makes for a peaceful base from which to explore both the local wine heritage and nearby villages such as Santa Maria del Camí and Consell.
