Modica

Modica is a town in the province of Ragusa, in Sicily, known for its baroque architecture and dramatic setting, built across steep hillsides and divided into two historic districts, Modica Alta and Modica Bassa, linked by winding stepped streets. The town was rebuilt following the 1693 earthquake, which accounts for its wealth of baroque heritage, including the Church of San Giorgio, designed by architect Rosario Gagliardi, one of the finest examples of the style. The castle of the Counts of Modica stands on a rocky outcrop overlooking the town. Modica is also renowned for its artisanal chocolate, made using an age-old method derived from Aztec tradition and introduced by the Spanish, without conching, giving it a distinctive grainy texture. Local gastronomy also showcases typical products from the Sicilian hinterland, such as olive oil and cheese. The Mediterranean climate, hot and dry in summer and mild in winter, makes it suitable for visits throughout the year. The town serves as a good base for exploring south-eastern Sicily, including Ragusa and the beaches along the Ionian coast.
