Bremen

Bremen, capital of Germany's smallest federal state, is a former Hanseatic city set on the banks of the River Weser, around 60 km from the North Sea. Its historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, features the Gothic and Renaissance town hall alongside the Roland statue on the Marktplatz, both symbols of the city's medieval independence. Nearby stands the bronze statue of the Town Musicians of Bremen, inspired by the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, where visitors traditionally touch the donkey's legs for good luck. The Schnoor quarter, with its narrow lanes and restored fishermen's cottages, contrasts with Böttcherstraße, renowned for its early 20th-century Expressionist architecture. St Peter's Cathedral also dominates the city centre. Bremen has its own culinary tradition too, including Bremer Klaben, a fruit bread particularly popular during the Christmas season, when a market is held around the Rathaus. As a historic river port with strong maritime and academic ties, Bremen remains a notable cultural and heritage destination in northern Germany, offering visitors a blend of medieval history and distinctive local character.
