St-Gervais

Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, in the Haute-Savoie region, lies at the foot of the Mont Blanc massif, between the Arve valley and the Franco-Swiss border. The resort is well known for its thermal spa, fed by a sulphurous hot spring that has been in use since the 19th century, offering treatments and relaxation throughout the year. In winter, the Saint-Gervais/Megève ski area, linked to the wider Evasion Mont-Blanc network, provides varied slopes and access to Mont d'Arbois. The Mont-Blanc tramway, unique in France, runs up to the Nid d'Aigle, giving views over the surrounding glaciers. The hamlet of Le Bettex and the village of Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce, with its baroque church and treasury, add further heritage interest to the area. In summer, the region draws walkers thanks to a network of trails leading to mountain pastures and viewpoints over Mont Blanc, particularly around Prarion and the Col de Voza. The local architecture, characterised by traditional wood-and-stone chalets, reflects the area's Savoyard identity. Close to Chamonix and Les Contamines-Montjoie, Saint-Gervais makes a practical base for exploring the upper Arve valley, combining mountain activities, thermal bathing and regional cuisine built around Savoyard cheeses.
