St-Gildas de Rhuys

Saint-Gildas-de-Rhuys is a village in Morbihan, located at the tip of the Rhuys peninsula, between the Gulf of Morbihan and the Atlantic Ocean. The village takes its name from the Romanesque abbey church founded in the 6th century by Saint Gildas, where the philosopher Pierre Abélard served as abbot in the 12th century; this building remains the area's main historical landmark. The commune stretches along a varied coastline, alternating sandy beaches such as Govelan with rocky headlands, all linked by the GR34 coastal footpath, popular for walking and taking in the maritime scenery. The mild oceanic climate, with gentle winters and moderate summers, makes outdoor activities possible for much of the year. Its proximity to Sarzeau and easy access to Vannes make it a convenient base for exploring the Gulf of Morbihan, its islands and harbours. Sailing, shellfish gathering and cycling are among the typical pastimes here. The area retains a rural, maritime character, free from heavy tourist crowds, making it well suited to quiet stays on the Breton peninsula.
