Piazza di Spagna, one of Rome's most iconic squares, is dominated by the grand Spanish Steps, which link the square to the Trinità dei Monti church perched atop the Pincian Hill. At the foot of the steps lies the Barcaccia Fountain, attributed to Pietro Bernini. Known for its elegant boutiques along Via dei Condotti, the district makes an excellent base for exploring the major sights of the historic centre. The Trevi Fountain, just a short walk away, is well worth a visit, as is the Colosseum, an iconic remnant of ancient Rome, and the Vatican Museums with the Sistine Chapel and St Peter's Basilica, a little further afield but reachable on foot or by public transport. The area is well connected and lively at all hours, allowing visitors to combine shopping, architectural heritage and Roman cuisine within a compact area. The Mediterranean climate makes visiting particularly pleasant in spring and autumn, while summer brings large crowds to the city's must-see landmarks.
