Beyond Rome's historic centre lies a mosaic of districts well worth exploring. The Vatican, an independent state enclosed within the capital, holds unmissable treasures: the Vatican Museums, home to an exceptional art collection, and St Peter's Basilica, whose architectural grandeur and Bernini-designed oval square never fail to impress. Not far away, the Roman Forum and the Colosseum recall the grandeur of the Empire, while the Baths of Caracalla, an impressive feat of ancient engineering, offer a quieter setting to understand daily Roman life. On the outskirts, Ostia Antica charms visitors with its remarkably well-preserved ruins, remnants of a once-thriving port, along with beach access for a seaside break after sightseeing. Between cultural visits, a sweet stop is worthwhile: the Limone shop serves artisanal gelato in a hollowed-out lemon, a refreshing and original treat. These varied districts, blending religious heritage, ancient ruins and Mediterranean charm, reveal a different side of Rome, far removed from the single image of the touristic centre.
