Venice

9 holiday rentals available in Venice.

Venice, built across its lagoon archipelago, is largely explored on foot, as most major sights can be reached without relying on the vaporetti, though a one- or two-day pass usually covers any boat journeys needed. St Mark's Square is the heart of the city, dominated by the basilica and adjoined by the Doge's Palace, best visited early in the morning to avoid the crowds. The Venice Opera House rounds off this itinerary within the San Marco sestiere. The lagoon islands deserve a separate excursion: Murano for its glass-making tradition and Burano for its colourful houses and lace-making. A night-time trip by vaporetto followed by a stroll on foot reveals the city in a different light, away from the daytime crowds. When it comes to food, the bacari, small typical bars, are ideal for enjoying an Aperol Spritz with cicchetti, while a pasticceria offers a cappuccino alongside a local pastry. The restaurant Bacaro Vintido, popular for its lively atmosphere and talented pianist, along with the ice cream from Suso, are among the well-regarded spots. A gondola ride remains a classic way to take in the canals.
