Salzburg

Salzburg, capital of the Austrian state of the same name, straddles the Salzach River at the foot of the Alps. Its Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is dominated by Hohensalzburg Fortress, one of Europe's largest and best-preserved medieval castles, reachable by funicular and offering sweeping views over the city. Salzburg is renowned worldwide as the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, whose childhood home can be visited on Getreidegasse, a historic shopping street known for its wrought-iron signs.
