St-Remy-de-Provence

Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is a town in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, nestled at the foot of the Alpilles hills amid olive groves and lavender fields. The town is known for its ancient heritage, notably the archaeological site of Glanum and the Les Antiques monument, which features a remarkably well-preserved Roman mausoleum and triumphal arch. Saint-Rémy is also closely associated with Vincent van Gogh, who stayed at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole monastery following his voluntary admission, a period during which he produced several major paintings. The town is additionally the birthplace of Nostradamus. Its historic centre, with plane-tree-lined lanes and lively squares, retains an authentic Provençal charm. The Wednesday morning market, well-known throughout the region, offers local produce, Provençal fabrics and regional specialities. The surrounding countryside is ideal for walking in the Alpilles hills and exploring nearby villages such as Les Baux-de-Provence. The Mediterranean climate, warm and dry in summer, makes outdoor activities possible for much of the year.
