Cavaillon

Cavaillon is a town in the Vaucluse department of Provence, nestled at the foot of the Colline Saint-Jacques and on the banks of the Durance river, between the Luberon and the Alpilles. Famous worldwide for its melons, a flagship local product with protected geographical status, the town hosts a lively Provençal market, particularly on Sunday mornings, drawing producers and traders from across the region. Cavaillon's heritage reflects its long history: the Roman arch, a remnant of the Gallo-Roman era, and the 18th-century former synagogue, one of the oldest still standing in France, bear witness to the historical importance of the Jewish community in the Comtat Venaissin. The Colline Saint-Jacques, reachable via a walking trail, offers views over the valley and its market-garden landscapes. Cavaillon makes a convenient base for exploring the Luberon, with its hilltop villages and lavender fields, as well as for day trips to Avignon or the Alpilles, both around thirty minutes away by car. The Mediterranean climate, warm and dry in summer, supports outdoor activities for much of the year.
