L'Isle sur la Sorgue

L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is a town in the Vaucluse department of Provence, crossed by several branches of the Sorgue river, earning it the nickname of the 'Venice of Provence'. Its historic centre features numerous waterwheels, remnants of the wool and papermaking industries that shaped the town until the 19th century. L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is well known for its Sunday market, one of the busiest in the region, as well as for its high concentration of antique dealers, particularly around Place Ferdinand Buisson and along the riverbanks. Two major antiques fairs, held at Easter and in mid-August, draw dealers and collectors from far afield each year. The Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame-des-Anges, with its Baroque interior, is another point of interest in the town centre. The location also serves as a convenient base for visiting the nearby Fontaine-de-Vaucluse spring, the Luberon massif, and hilltop villages such as Gordes or Roussillon. The typical Provençal climate, warm and dry in summer, makes outdoor activities possible for much of the year.
