Illkirch

Illkirch-Graffenstaden, a town in the Bas-Rhin department just south of Strasbourg, makes a convenient base for exploring the Alsatian capital and its surroundings. Strasbourg, easily reached, is home to its striking Gothic cathedral with its astronomical clock, as well as the picturesque Petite France district, criss-crossed by the canals of the Ill river. A boat trip aboard a Batorama offers a different perspective on the city, while canoeing provides a more active way to explore the surrounding waterways. After sightseeing, Au Brasseur, known for its artisanal Alsatian beers, or Tire-Bouchon, are well-regarded spots to sample regional cuisine, particularly flammekueche. From Illkirch, the Alsace Wine Route and Mont Sainte-Odile make for excellent nature and heritage excursions.
