Paris 18th

The 18th arrondissement is dominated by the hill of Montmartre, where the Sacré-Cœur basilica offers one of the most sweeping panoramic views over Paris. The neighbourhood invites leisurely strolls through cobbled lanes, past artists' studios and walls adorned with street art. Place Dalida, with its bust honouring the singer, is a popular stop before heading down towards the Moulin Rouge, on the edge of Pigalle. For a bite to eat, visitors can head to the Alexine bakery or to the small Italian restaurant Il Padrino, both local favourites. The 18th retains a village-like atmosphere, far removed from the bustle of the grand boulevards, while still being within easy reach of Paris's main sights by metro. The capital's museums, several of which are free for under-26s, make a useful addition to any visit to the area. Between its distinctive staircases, open views and artistic ambiance inherited from the early 20th century, Montmartre remains one of the most recognisable faces of Paris.
