Port-Vendres

Port-Vendres is a coastal town in the Pyrénées-Orientales department, on the Côte Vermeille, situated between Collioure and the Spanish border. Its natural harbour, the largest on the French Catalan coast, combines traditional fishing activity, including an active fish auction, with a well-used marina. The town retains an obelisk erected in honour of Louis XVI, a reminder of its past as a military stronghold under the Ancien Régime. Cap Béar, with its lighthouse and coastal paths, offers views over the Mediterranean and allows for walks along the rocky coves typical of this stretch of coastline. Its proximity to Collioure and Banyuls-sur-Mer connects it to the vineyards producing Collioure and Banyuls appellation wines, grown on terraced hillsides nearby. The Mediterranean climate, shaped by the tramontane wind, supports water sports and walking along the coastal footpath. The harbourside, lined with seafood restaurants, reflects the town's maritime character, which remains largely authentic despite seasonal tourist numbers.
