Banyuls sur mer

Banyuls-sur-Mer is a seaside town on the Côte Vermeille in the Pyrénées-Orientales, set beneath terraced vineyards that produce the renowned Banyuls AOC sweet wine. Close to the Spanish border, it enjoys a pleasant Mediterranean climate and a well-preserved natural setting, thanks to the Cerbère-Banyuls marine reserve, popular for diving and exploring the underwater landscape. The coastal path linking Banyuls to Cerbère is a favoured walking route, offering open views over the sea and rocky coves; it pairs well with a day of canoeing or paddleboarding along the shoreline, easily arranged from the harbour. The town is also home to the Arago laboratory, dedicated to marine science, and has links to sculptor Aristide Maillol, who was born in the area. For breakfast or a sweet treat, the bakery Le Fournil de Mael et Gaelle is known locally for its bread and pastries. Between sea, vineyards and coastal trails, Banyuls-sur-Mer offers a fitting mix of outdoor activities and Catalan local produce, making it a well-rounded base for exploring this stretch of the French Mediterranean coast.
