Sorrento

Perched on a cliff overlooking the Bay of Naples, Sorrento makes an excellent base for exploring the Amalfi Coast and the area around Mount Vesuvius. Its historic centre, with pedestrian lanes, lemon groves and lively squares, is easy to explore on foot. From the harbour, boats run to Capri for day trips, a particularly popular excursion thanks to its dramatic scenery and hidden coves. Nearby, the archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum offer a remarkable insight into ancient life buried by the eruption of Vesuvius, and are easily reached by train from Sorrento. The coastline also offers lovely spots for a swim, notably around Bagni Regina Giovanna, a natural cove reached by car followed by a short fifteen-minute walk, known for its clear waters and striking rock formations. Positano, with its colourful houses tumbling down towards the sea, rounds off a stay in the region rather naturally. Between ancient heritage, coastal scenery and picturesque villages, Sorrento brings together several highlights of southern Italy within easy reach.
