Alcantarilha

Alcantarilha is a small town within the municipality of Silves, in Portugal's Algarve region, just a few kilometres from the Atlantic coast and Armação de Pêra beach. Straddling the EN125 national road, it retains a rural character shaped by olive, orange and almond groves typical of the area. Its main heritage feature is the parish church, adjoined by a bone chapel (Capela dos Ossos), a type of religious structure found in several Algarve villages. The town has a railway station on the Algarve line, providing convenient connections to Faro and Lagos. About ten kilometres away lies Silves, the former Moorish capital known for its castle and Gothic cathedral. The Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild winters, supports coastal tourism nearby, particularly around Armação de Pêra with its fine sandy beaches framed by cliffs. Alcantarilha remains primarily a quiet inland base, valued for its central location between the coastline and the agricultural hinterland of the Algarve.
