Alvor

Alvor is a former fishing village on the Algarve coast, within the municipality of Portimão in southern Portugal. Its historic centre retains a network of narrow lanes and whitewashed houses, characteristic of coastal Algarve villages. The parish church of Alvor, built in the Manueline style, is one of the village's notable heritage features. Alvor is fronted by an extensive sandy beach, Praia de Alvor, which stretches for several kilometres and merges with the Ria de Alvor estuary, a protected wetland known for its birdlife and popular for walking. The still-active fishing harbour supplies local restaurants, where grilled fish, seafood and cataplana dishes are common specialities of the region. The area enjoys a mild climate year-round, with hot, dry summers and gentle winters typical of Portugal's southern Atlantic coast. Alvor lies close to Portimão and Praia da Rocha, making it a convenient base for exploring the wider Algarve while retaining a quieter, more traditional atmosphere than some of its larger neighbours.
