Marbella

Marbella, on Andalusia's Costa del Sol, revolves around two distinct areas: the old town, with its whitewashed lanes and flower-filled squares, and the Puerto Banús marina, known for its yachts, upmarket boutiques and lively nightlife. The seafront is ideal for strolling as well as water sports such as jet-skiing, while the beaches and a nearby water park draw families during the summer months. For a bite to eat by the marina, the pizzeria Picasso and the restaurant El Jardín, praised for its friendly atmosphere, are worth a mention. Several day trips are within easy reach, including Estepona, Ronda with its dramatic gorge, or further afield Malaga, Seville and Granada for a more cultural outing. The hilltop village of Mijas, with its craft market and flamenco shows held some evenings in the main square, rounds out the local sights, alongside Fuengirola Zoo for a family outing. A shopping centre such as La Cañada is also handy for a spot of retail therapy. The mild Mediterranean climate, pleasant for much of the year, supports this blend of beach and cultural tourism.
