L'Escala

L'Escala is a coastal town on the Costa Brava, in the province of Girona, Catalonia. The village is known for its anchovies, a traditional local speciality still prepared using artisanal methods. Cala Montgó beach, set within an unspoilt natural environment, serves as a popular starting point for kayaking trips, while the harbour offers boat excursions along the coastline. A coastal footpath connects this area to Punta Ventosa, providing a scenic seaside walking route along the rocky shore. Nearby stands the Montgó Tower, a former watchtower dating back to the 16th century, reflecting the region's defensive heritage. The Empúries archaeological site, remains of an ancient Greco-Roman settlement, is also located in the immediate vicinity. The town makes a convenient base for exploring other Costa Brava destinations such as Roses or Lloret de Mar, where scuba diving is popular thanks to varied and interesting seabeds. The region's Mediterranean climate supports outdoor activities for much of the year.
