La Ciotat

La Ciotat, a port town in the Bouches-du-Rhône département, retains a strong maritime character shaped by its former shipyards, now redeveloped and visible along the waterfront. The old port, lined with colourful façades, remains the heart of the town and a natural starting point for exploring the surrounding coastline. Nearby, the Figuerolles cove offers a rocky setting with turquoise water, popular for swimming. La Ciotat is also known for the Eden Théâtre, regarded as one of the oldest cinemas in the world still in operation, linked to the Lumière brothers who screened one of their earliest public films there. About twenty minutes away, Cassis makes for an essential excursion: Cap Canaille, one of the highest maritime cliffs in France, overlooks the sea, while the calanques of En Vau, Port-Miou and Port-Pin draw visitors with their clear waters set between limestone cliffs.
