Oleron Island

Oleron Island, the largest island on the French Atlantic coast after Corsica, lies in the Charente-Maritime department and is connected to the mainland by a viaduct. The Chassiron lighthouse, at the island's northern tip, remains one of its most iconic landmarks, recognisable by its black-and-white striped tower and sweeping ocean views. Nearby, a museum showcases the island's history and maritime traditions. The Château d'Oléron, a former stronghold, is also worth a visit for its historical heritage. The island is known for its extensive pine forests, which fringe several beaches and provide scenic routes for walking or cycling, particularly around Saint-Trojan-les-Bains. Sunsets along the coastline, especially from the beaches on the western side, are a popular way to end the day. From Oleron, boat trips can be arranged to the Île d'Aix, reachable from Boyardville or the mainland, offering a chance to explore another side of the region's island heritage. Oyster farming, a long-standing tradition in the Marennes-Oléron basin, also shapes the local landscape and economy.
