Re Island

Re Island, connected to the mainland by a toll bridge from La Rochelle, is best explored by bicycle, with cycle paths running along the coastline and through the salt marshes. These marshes, still worked using traditional methods, shape the landscape alongside whitewashed villages with colourful shutters. The Phare des Baleines lighthouse, located at the western tip of the island near Saint-Clément-des-Baleines, is a notable landmark for views over the Atlantic Ocean. In the village of Loix, the local donkeys wearing trousers—once used for transport across the marshes—reflect the island's agricultural past; the village is also home to Loix et Savon, a small shop selling handmade soaps produced from local ingredients.
