Island of Noirmoutier

The Island of Noirmoutier, in the Vendée region, is linked to the mainland by a road bridge and by the Passage du Gois, a causeway that floods at high tide but can be crossed on foot or by car at low tide. The island is known for its salt marshes, where salt is still harvested using traditional methods, and for growing early potatoes, particularly the prized Bonnotte variety. The main town, Noirmoutier-en-l'Île, features a medieval castle and a church with an ancient crypt. The Bois de la Chaise, with its seaside villas and pine forest overlooking the sea, is one of the most popular spots for walking and swimming. Oyster farming and fishing remain important local activities, particularly around the harbour of L'Herbaudière. The mild oceanic climate supports seaside tourism, cycling along the island's extensive network of cycle paths, and exploration of its maritime heritage. Fine sandy beaches line much of the coastline, making it a pleasant destination for families or couples seeking a mix of unspoilt nature and well-preserved local traditions.
