Ciboure

Ciboure is a town in the French Basque Country, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department, located directly across the harbour from Saint-Jean-de-Luz. This former fishing village retains an authentic charm, with traditional Basque houses featuring red or green shutters lining the Quai Ravel, named after composer Maurice Ravel, who was born here. The Socoa district, with its 17th-century fort and small harbour, offers a quieter atmosphere and open views across the bay. The Basque corniche, linking Ciboure to Hendaye, is a popular walking route known for its panoramic views over the Atlantic Ocean. The town enjoys a mild oceanic climate well suited to watersports such as surfing, sailing and fishing. The local market and shops provide a good introduction to Basque cuisine, particularly seafood and traditional pastries. Close to the Spanish border, Ciboure makes a convenient base for exploring both the French Basque coast and nearby cities such as San Sebastián, while offering a more residential and less touristy setting than its neighbour Saint-Jean-de-Luz.
