La Rochelle

La Rochelle is best known for its old harbour, watched over by three historic towers, the Saint-Nicolas Tower, the Chain Tower and the Lantern Tower, all reminders of the city's seafaring past. The town centre, with its arcaded streets and the Nelson Mandela passage, is ideal for strolling, as is the covered market. La Rochelle's aquarium, one of the most highly regarded in France, is a must-see, alongside the maritime museum and the museum of automatons. Sunsets over the harbour or from Minimes beach are particularly popular, while a catamaran or boat trip sometimes offers the chance to spot dolphins en route to Fort Boyard or the Île d'Aix. The Île de Ré, reachable via the bridge or by bike to avoid the toll, makes for a perfect day trip, as do the quieter beaches of Aytré compared with those in town. For a bite to eat, Le P'tit Amiral restaurant in the city centre serves generous, seafood-focused dishes. Between maritime heritage, water sports and coastal charm, La Rochelle suits a range of holiday paces.
