Urrugne

Urrugne is a town in the French Basque Country, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department, right by the Spanish border. Its historic centre retains typical half-timbered Basque houses, pelota courts and the Saint-Vincent church, notable for its sundial bearing the Latin inscription 'Vulnerant omnes, ultima necat'. The Château d'Urtubie, a 14th-century manor still occupied by the same family, is open to visitors and features period furnishings along with wooded grounds. The town is also home to Golf de la Nivelle, one of the oldest golf courses in the Basque Country. Saint-Jean-de-Luz, a well-known seaside resort with a fine beach and fishing harbour, is around a 10-minute drive away, giving easy access to shops, restaurants and the lively coastal atmosphere. Urrugne therefore makes a convenient base for exploring the Corniche basque coastal road, the beaches of Socoa and Hendaye, and the nearby Spanish border. Its temperate oceanic climate and gently rolling countryside also make it a pleasant spot for walking and exploring the rural Basque landscape.
