Grau-du-Roi

Le Grau-du-Roi, a seaside resort in the Gard department on the edge of the Camargue, owes much of its appeal to the Espiguette beach, a vast stretch of fine sand backed by wild dunes. The village retains the lively feel of a working fishing port, with boats coming and going along the quaysides and a traditional market held regularly. The Seaquarium, devoted to Mediterranean marine life, is one of the area's main attractions, alongside a popular mini-golf course enjoyed by families. Evenings are best spent in the town centre, where cafés and shops keep the streets buzzing well after sunset. The Café de la Jetée, with its distinctive décor, serves well-regarded dishes overlooking the harbour. The nearby salt marshes, remnants of the region's traditional salt production, are worth a visit, as is the fortified medieval town of Aigues-Mortes just a short drive away. Montpellier, easily reached, rounds off a trip with a dose of city culture. Locally, there's no shortage of things to do: horse riding through Camargue landscapes, water sports, and ice cream enjoyed along the quayside.
