Nice

Nice is best known for the Château hill, reached on foot or by little tourist train, offering panoramic views over the Bay of Angels, the Promenade des Anglais and the old town, complete with a waterfall and a prime sunset viewpoint. The old town itself rewards a leisurely stroll, taking in Sainte-Réparate Cathedral, Place Masséna and the lively lanes around Port Lympia. A stop at Fenocchio, well known for its unusual ice cream flavours, is well worth it. The city also makes an excellent base for exploring the French Riviera by train, with Villefranche-sur-Mer and its sandy beach, Monaco, Cannes and even Ventimiglia all within easy, affordable reach. Art lovers can visit the Matisse Museum and MAMAC, while those after something more active can try jet-skiing, parasailing or boat trips departing from the old port. Cycling along the seafront promenade is another popular way to take in the coastline. In winter, Christmas markets and the nearby glamour of Monaco add further appeal to this varied Mediterranean destination.
