La chatre

La Châtre is a small town in the Indre department, in the Centre-Val de Loire region, set in the heart of the Berry area on the banks of the River Indre. A sub-prefecture of the department, it is best known for its proximity to Nohant-Vic, the village where the writer George Sand lived, and whose house can still be visited today. The town itself is home to the George Sand and Vallée Noire Museum, housed in a medieval keep, which traces the writer's life and the surrounding countryside she described as the 'Vallée Noire'. This bocage landscape, made up of meadows, hedgerows and small streams, forms the natural backdrop of the region and is well suited to walking or cycling. La Châtre retains a historic centre with a number of old houses and a lively traditional market. Local gastronomy follows Berry traditions, featuring products such as goat's cheese and pâtés. The town makes a convenient base for exploring rural Berry, combining literary heritage with unspoilt countryside, away from major tourist routes.
